Hair of the Dog

Batch 22 was honored to provide the signature cocktails for the 2023 Annual Gala presented by Spike’s K9 Fund in New York City. The nonprofit provides care for working dogs that serve alongside first responders of all kinds and insures that the dogs are provided for after their service is done. For the black tie gala, which took place at the top of the Freedom Tower in Manhattan, we created three specialty cocktails. Hair of the Dog was one of them.

Instructions

  • Combine in a shaker with ice:
    • 2 oz. Batch 22
    • 1 oz. Sangue Morlacco
    • .5 oz. Blanco tequila
    • .5 oz. Lime juice
    • Either: Thai Spice bitter / Serrano bitters
  • Shake and strain into a rocks glass with ice. Squeeze fresh lime over the cocktail and garnish with lime peel.

Immaculate Reception Punch (about 15-20 servings)

Largely hailed as the greatest play in NFL history, Franco Harris’s catch in the final seconds of the 1972 AFC divisional playoff game won the day for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dubbed “The Immaculate Reception,” the ball landed in Harris’s hands after bouncing off an opposing player, after which Harris ran it nearly 50 yards for the TD. The 2 shots of rye in this recipe are a tribute to Harris (who died in December 2022) and the city of Pittsburgh, as this is also the town that gave birth to the Boilermaker (beer and a shot of whiskey).

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle Batch 22 Classic Gold
  • 3 cups cranberry juice, chilled
  • 1 cup pomegranate juice, chilled
  • 2 shots of rye whiskey
  • 1 1/2 cups chilled ginger ale
  • 1/4 cup Simple Syrup
  • 1 bottle prosecco, chilled

Instructions

Mix all ingredients, except prosecco, in a large punch bowl with ice and garnishes. When ready to serve, add prosecco and stir gently to combine.

K9

We were asked to come up with an espresso cocktail for the Spike’s K9 Fund Gala in New York City, and we were asked to use coffee from San Diego-based coffee roaster, Seven Seas. This fun riff on a White Russian is what we came up with. It makes a great dessert!

Instructions

  • 1.5 oz. Batch 22
  • 1 oz. Frangelico
  • .5 oz. Cream
  • 2 oz. Espresso
  • Garnish with coffee beans.

Kickoff Punch (about 12-15 servings)

The original Mule cocktail was named for the spicy “kick” it gets from the addition of ginger beer. Here’s a great Mule punch that your guests will surely get a kick out of.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle Batch 22 Classic Gold
  • 1 cup fresh-squeezed lime juice (or Rose’s lime, which will be sweeter)
  • 12 dashes of angostura bitters
  • 5 cups Ginger Beer

Instructions

  • Garnish with fresh mint sprigs and/or lime wheels
  • Mix all ingredients (except ginger beer) in a punch bowl with ice and garnishes Add ginger beer last. Garnish individual glasses with mint leaves or lime wheels, if desired.

La Cienega (Boulevardier riff)

We are good friends with fellow San Diegans who launched their own spirit brand—Fierce & Kind—around the same time as we launched Batch 22. We are big fans of their straight bourbon, and we are constantly innovating to create cocktails that marry their bourbon with our spirit. We think this one does the trick.

Instructions

  • Combine in shaker with ice:
    • 1.5 oz. Batch 22
    • .75 oz. Fierce & Kind bourbon
    • .5 oz. Aperol
    • .5 oz. Sweet vermouth
    • .5 oz. Lime
  • Shake and strain into a rocks glass and garnish with orange peel.

M22 (Batch 22 Manhattan)

We love our version of the classic Manhattan cocktail, which is not as sweet and offers more complexity of flavor. The M22 also happens to be a city bus that runs in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Instructions

  • Shake over ice:
    • 2 oz. Batch 22 Classic Gold aquavit
    • .5 oz. dry vermouth
    • .5 oz. sweet vermouth
    • Optional: teaspoon of cherry liquid or Luxardo’s Sangue Morlacco
  • Strain into rocks glass with one large cube
  • Garnish with Luxardo cherry

Meet Me in Torino

We ordered the Accompani Blue Dorris from one of our favorite specialty websites and were intrigued by its super unique aromas and flavors. Dominated by aspects of woodiness, peppercorns, roses, and other florals, this elixir adds a distinct layer of complexity to a cocktail. The big challenge was to create a recipe that allowed Batch and Accompani to complement each other without either being lost or overpowering the other. It took a while, but we think we finally came up with a cocktail that makes every component shine.

Instructions

  • In a shaker with ice combine:
    • 1.25 oz. Batch 22 Classic Gold
    • .5 oz. Accompani Blue Dorris
    • .75 oz. Amaro di Torino
    • 1.5 oz. Orange juice
    • 3 dashes Sasparilla bitters
  • Pour into rocks glass and add 2 oz. soda.
  • Garnish: singed orange peel

Midnight Sun (Viking Cruise Lines)

We were thrilled when we heard from Viking that Batch 22 was going to be added to their bar program. Viking ships all feature an aquavit bar, and Batch 22 is going to be the only American aquavit represented.  To honor our partnership, we created a signature cocktail that we hope will find its way to the bar on each and every Viking ship.

Instructions

  • In a shaker with ice combine:
    • 2 oz. Batch 22
    • .5 oz. Aperol
    • .5 oz. Amaro
    • .5 oz. Hibiscus liqueur
    • 1 oz. Lemon juice
    • 1 oz. Lemonade
    • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Shake vigorously and strain into a rocks glass with ice. Garnish with a lemon wheel.

Mon Cherry

In all our recipe development work, we found that cherries and Batch 22 Classic Gold aquavit play very well together and we wanted to craft a cocktail that would really satisfy the cherry lover. Turns out, we think it’ll also just satisfy the lover. Not too sweet, this drink has layers of flavor and just a touch of sparkle.

Instructions

  • Shake over ice:
    • 4 oz. Batch 22 Classic Gold
    • 4 oz. tart cherry juice
    • 2 tbsp. fresh lime juice
    • 2 tbsp. simple syrup
  • Strain into large coupes or martini glasses
    • To the glasses, add:
    • 1/4 cup ginger beer (half to each glass)
    • 1/4 cup tonic (half to each glass)
  • Morello cherries in syrup for garnish.
