What is Batch 22?
Batch 22 is a modern, American take on a traditional Scandinavian spirit called aquavit. Crafted with a unique blend of toasted caraway seed, dill, and citrus, Batch 22 is distilled from corn, giving it a smooth and distinct character with no alcohol burn. Our mission is to revive and reimagine aquavit for a new generation of spirit enthusiasts.
What kind of spirit is aquavit?
Aquavit is a unique spirit category all its own. Originating in Scandinavia, it is traditionally distilled from grain or potatoes. Batch 22 uses corn as its base. Aquavit is flavored predominantly with caraway or dill, and is customarily enjoyed chilled, especially during festive occasions. Batch 22 offers a modern, American twist on this historic spirit, making it accessible and enjoyable for a wide range of palates.
Is aquavit a bourbon?
No, aquavit is not a bourbon. Bourbon is a type of American whiskey made primarily from corn and aged in new charred oak barrels. Batch 22 is distilled from corn and is not aged. Aquavit is defined by its specific infusion of botanicals, most notably caraway or dill, which sets it apart from bourbon and other whiskeys.
Is aquavit a whiskey?
Aquavit is not a whiskey. Whiskey is a broad category of spirits distilled from fermented grain mash and aged in barrels. While Batch 22 is distilled from corn, its defining feature is the infusion of distinctive botanicals which gives it a smooth, herbaceous flavor profile quite different from whiskey.
Is aquavit a gin?
Aquavit is not a gin. Gin is flavored primarily with juniper berries and an array of other botanicals. In contrast, aquavit—including Batch 22, which is distilled from corn—relies on caraway or dill as its main flavoring ingredient. The taste and aroma of aquavit are markedly different from gin.
How should I enjoy Batch 22?
Batch 22 can be sipped straight, served chilled, or used as a base in creative cocktails. Its complex botanical profile makes it versatile for mixing or sipping. Try Batch 22 neat, on the rocks, or as a substitute for other spirits in your favorite cocktails! Dozens of recipes can be found here.

Who founded Batch 22?
The Batch 22 brand is owned by Downtime Cocktails, Inc., which was founded by three best friends in Los Angeles during the pandemic. The three founders are Matthew Arkin, Bruce Glassman, and Marc Marosi. The trio developed and honed their unique recipe for an aquavit that is exceptionally sippable, smooth, and approachable. The first bottles of Batch 22 arrived at the warehouse in July of 2022.
Where does the name come from?
The brand’s name actually derives from two separate places. First, it was literally the 22nd recipe and flavor formulation that our founders created while developing their spirit in a Los Angeles kitchen. When they realized that the perfect recipe was actually “batch 22” they also realized this would be the perfect name for a second reason: Matthew’s father, actor Alan Arkin, was responsible for first suggesting that Matthew try to make aquavit at home, and he played Yosarian in the movie “Catch 22.” So the name was also the founders’ “tip of the cap” to Alan, who first inspired them.
